- Unrevealing sequence and structural features of novel coronavirus using in silico approaches: The main protease as molecular target. [Journal Article]
- Direct-acting antivirals are effective tools to control viral infections. SARS-CoV-2 is a coronavirus associated with the epidemiological outbreak in late 2019. Previous reports showed that HIV-1 protease inhibitors could block SARS-CoV main protease. Based on that and using an in silico approach, we evaluated SARS-CoV-2 main protease as a target for HIV-1 protease inhibitors to reveal the struct…

- The Effectiveness of Integrated Care Pathways for Adults and Children in Health Care Settings: A Systematic Review. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Our review indicates that ICPs can have positive effects on service quality and efficiency as a result of their functions. They are effective in supporting the timely implementation of clinical interventions and the mobilisation of resources around the patient without incurring additional increases in length of stay. They also have value in supporting implementation of best practice guidelines and protocols by translating these into a format which is suitable for daily use by busy health professionals, thereby improving inter and intra-professional consensus and reducing unacceptable variations in clinical practice. Because they function as accumulating and distributing devices ICPs may also bring about improvements in documentation, which in turn augments their coordinating effects. They provide a focal point of reference - a common resource - to which various members can refer in order to understand where their role fits into the larger whole and determine what actions are necessary and when.

- CONCLUSIONS: The field of antimicrobial resistance is dynamic and rapidly evolving, and the treatment of antimicrobial-resistant infections will continue to challenge clinicians. This guidance document is current as of 17 September 2020. Updates to this guidance document will occur periodically as new data emerge. Furthermore, the panel will expand recommendations to include other problematic gram-negative pathogens in future versions. - Clinical and Pathophysiological Overview of Acinetobacter Infections: a Century of Challenges. [Review]
- Acinetobacter is a complex genus, and historically, there has been confusion about the existence of multiple species. The species commonly cause nosocomial infections, predominantly aspiration pneumonia and catheter-associated bacteremia, but can also cause soft tissue and urinary tract infections. Community-acquired infections by Acinetobacter spp. are increasingly reported. Transmission of Acin…

- Underuse of beta-blockers by patients with COPD and co-morbid acute coronary syndrome: A nationwide follow-up study in New Zealand. [Journal Article]
- CONCLUSIONS: Use of beta-blockers following an ACS admission was much lower than expected based on the findings of general audits of ACS management in New Zealand. Along with the higher proportions using aspirin and statins, and the differences in beta-blocker dispensing by COPD severity, this suggests a particular reluctance to prescribe beta-blockers to patients with COPD.

- Colchicine, the toxin of the autumn crocus, has various anti-inflammatory effects. For this reason, it is being used for the treatment of several autoinflammatory diseases, such as gout or familial Mediterranean fever (FMF). In addition, some interesting studies have been published which suggest the benefits of colchicine in cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, various anti-inflammatory therapeu…

- [Pericarditis is inflammation of the pericardium, which rheumatologists should know]. [Review]
- Pericarditis is the term for inflammatory involvement of the pericardium, which can be associated with pericardial effusion and myocardial involvement (perimyocarditis). Pericarditis can be present in the context of systemic inflammatory rheumatic diseases but can also constitute a distinct disease entity. Idiopathic recurrent pericarditis (IRP) describes relapsing conditions of pericarditis with…

- We report the case of a 42-year-old male patient with acute onset of asymmetrical polyarthritis of the medium and large joints as well as fever and elevated serological inflammation markers. The symptoms began shortly after initiation of thiamazole treatment for newly diagnosed Graves' disease. Antithyroid arthritis syndrome (AAS) is a rare but serious adverse side effect of antithyroid treatment…

- [Auricular chondritis as first symptom of ANCA-associated vasculitis]. [Case Reports]Z Rheumatol. 2020 Nov; 79(9):902-905.ZR
- Auricular chondritis frequently occurs in relapsing polychondritis. In addition to the primary form of the disease up to 30% of cases of chondritis can be secondary, e.g. due to autoimmune diseases. We describe the case of a 62-year-old male patient with auricular chondritis as the first symptom of granulomatosis with polyangiitis. Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) associated vasculitis…

- To kidney or not to kidney: Applying lessons learned from the simultaneous liver-kidney transplant policy to simultaneous heart-kidney transplantation. [Review]
- As the medical community is increasingly offering transplantation to patients with increasing comorbidity burdens, the number of simultaneous heart-kidney (SHK) transplants is rising in the United States. How to determine eligibility for SHK transplant versus heart transplant alone is unknown. In this review, we situate this problem in the broader picture of organ shortage. We critically appraise…
